Service - How to Give Back?

Today, let’s sit back and think about how much you receive from your community.
Remember your teacher at school who went out of her way to help you study?
OR
That restaurant worker? Who always knew your order and would start preparing it before you even spoke?
I bet you felt their kindness from those experiences?

If so, don’t you think it’s time to pass it forward to someone?
True, this is one aspect of serving your community. But, another one is your growth. Yes, you read right!
Service to the community or society is just as beneficial to you as it is to the community. Let’s see how!

How to Do It?
There are many ways to do community service, even if you are busy and don’t have time to spare.
  • Volunteer: Sounds simple. Investing your time in something is the best way you can give back. Volunteer to help people at homeless shelters, schools, wherever required.
  • Help thy neighbor: Surely, charity begins at home. Look around. See your neighbor with a flat tire? Help them out. That is also a service.
  • Plant a tree: I cannot stress how important it is, and it will serve generations to come. Plant and look after a tree.
  • Help a child study: This is one of the easiest things to do.  You can do it virtually. This year many schools, including the ones in Hillsborough County where Journey to Esquire resides, have the Great American Teach-In  coming up soon. And for Black History Month,  there is the African-American Read-In. With virtual technology, you can read to a child today and help increase their reading ability. Many charities fund children’s educations specifically to help them to study.
  • Find a charity your passionate about: Find a cause that is near and dear to your heart. Plus, whenever you find time to attend and participate in their fundraisers. Follow it through.

These were some ways in which you can “give back” to the community.
Look below for a chart that demonstrates how paying it forward benefits both you and your community at large.

Service is essential to your personal growth. I would suggest you inculcate a “servant attitude” to succeed in life. If you have an attitude to serve and help others, success will follow you everywhere you go.
