Equity - Treat Them Fairly

Equity - Treat Them Fairly

Sure, it is pretty easy to do, right?
All you need to do is to treat everyone the same?
For example: You are giving meatballs to everyone at lunch, irrespective of rage, age, gender etc. This seems like equity.
Wrong.
This is not equity. This is equality.
Now, we have established so far that both aren’t the same.
But, How?
In the example above, what if person A was vegan. He, along with a handful of people, don’t eat meat.
So, what should have been done?
Following the concept of equity, a menu with both vegan/ veg/ non-veg options should have been provided at the lunch and people should have been given an option to choose.
Makes sense?

Equity in the Workplace.

A very important point is that the equity process should be transparent. Everyone needs to know they have equal opportunities. It is surely a two way-process. If you are giving equal opportunities to people, they are also equally responsible for their actions.

How Can You Achieve It?
  • It starts with diversity. The more diverse workforce you have, the more you need equity in the organization.
  • Secondly, empower people. They should know they are heard.
  • If I am giving you equitable pay, rewards, benefits, resources like the others, i.e. , the organization can more readily expect great results from its people.
Why Is It Important?
Well, not only does it make employees feel important and motivated to perform well, but it has other advantages also.
  • Employee Retention: A powerful employee is a happy one. Right? Moreover, if they are getting fair treatment, they would not switch jobs easily.
  • Cognitive ability: When everyone is involved, the cognitive skills increase and the decision-making process becomes better.
  • Increases profits.
Simply put, equity is vital to the survival of an organization to develop a brand name, increase performance and profits, and create a pleasant work environment.

Service - How to Give Back.

Service - How to Give Back?

Today, let’s sit back and think about how much you receive from your community.
Remember your teacher at school who went out of her way to help you study?
OR
That restaurant worker? Who always knew your order and would start preparing it before you even spoke?
I bet you felt their kindness from those experiences?

If so, don’t you think it’s time to pass it forward to someone?
True, this is one aspect of serving your community. But, another one is your growth. Yes, you read right!
Service to the community or society is just as beneficial to you as it is to the community. Let’s see how!

How to Do It?
There are many ways to do community service, even if you are busy and don’t have time to spare.
  • Volunteer: Sounds simple. Investing your time in something is the best way you can give back. Volunteer to help people at homeless shelters, schools, wherever required.
  • Help thy neighbor: Surely, charity begins at home. Look around. See your neighbor with a flat tire? Help them out. That is also a service.
  • Plant a tree: I cannot stress how important it is, and it will serve generations to come. Plant and look after a tree.
  • Help a child study: This is one of the easiest things to do.  You can do it virtually. This year many schools, including the ones in Hillsborough County where Journey to Esquire resides, have the Great American Teach-In  coming up soon. And for Black History Month,  there is the African-American Read-In. With virtual technology, you can read to a child today and help increase their reading ability. Many charities fund children’s educations specifically to help them to study.
  • Find a charity your passionate about: Find a cause that is near and dear to your heart. Plus, whenever you find time to attend and participate in their fundraisers. Follow it through.

These were some ways in which you can “give back” to the community.
Look below for a chart that demonstrates how paying it forward benefits both you and your community at large.

Service is essential to your personal growth. I would suggest you inculcate a “servant attitude” to succeed in life. If you have an attitude to serve and help others, success will follow you everywhere you go.
